Family is affected by Alcoholism – as a parent with children who have grown up experiencing the impact of Alcoholism – I have moments when I think how good it could have been if I had not lived around this Disease. It has always been around me though and I probably couldn’t (or wouldn’t) have done anything differently.
[expand title=”The Disease”]
In the midst of the chaos and madness – all the passion and emotion – anger frustration guilt self-pity and loss of hope the most difficult thing is making decisions that are safe, sensible, pragmatic and above all else good for your children and or family.
This Disease took away my capacity to make good decisions and for quite a while I was happily, mad as a cut snake – the impact of me on others was probably as profound as the impact of the alcoholic – it was the Disease.
Learning that Alcoholism / Addiction is a Disease was both comforting and distressing at the same time. All of a sudden I could no longer blame the Alcoholic. Instead I had to take responsibility for my own behaviours – my own reactions – my own decisions – my own feelings.
Suffering from this Disease is a little different to some other diseases. The behaviours and attitudes can make the Alcoholic unbearable. It is easy to blame the Alcoholic but it is very difficult to review, Honestly, our own behaviour and attitudes. It is difficult to keep an Open Mind and learn about the Disease, but we have to be Willing – to heal our own self. One of the identifying symptoms pointed out to me was “You can always tell there is an Alcoholic / Addict in the family by how mad the partner is!!” This was true of me.
I learnt that if you live with an Alcoholic or Addict or if you have grown up in a family affected by this Disease – there is help available.
I suggest that you call Al Anon family groups in your area.
“Al Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength and hope in order to solve their common problems. ………”
I suggest going to around 10 meetings, being Wiling to listen, Keep an open mind and being Honest with yourself – before you decide if Al Anon is for you.
